We start at Plaça Nova, where Barcelona began as Roman Barcino. Beside the cathedral façade, the low arches set into the wall are the surviving spans of a Roman aqueduct, and the line of the old city wall still traces the square. It is the clearest place to see how far the ancient city reached before we walk into it.

Full Description
The Gothic Quarter holds two thousand years of city life in a few hundred meters, and on this private walk we follow it in order, from the Roman walls to the arcades of Plaça Reial. We start at Plaça Nova, where the aqueduct arches and the line of the old wall show how far Roman Barcino reached, then step into the streets of the medieval city.
Barcelona Cathedral, the Mercat de Santa Caterina, and Plaça del Rei follow one after another, and each one shows a different layer of the same neighborhood: the Gothic church built over centuries, the market that replaced a convent, and the square that held the palace of the counts of Barcelona. A few steps off Carrer Paradís, the four columns of the Temple of Augustus bring the Roman city back into view.
From Plaça Sant Jaume, where the City Hall and the Palau de la Generalitat face each other, we pass under the neo-Gothic Pont del Bisbe into El Call, the medieval Jewish quarter. Plaça de Sant Felip Neri, with its baroque church and the marks of the Civil War on the walls, and the Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi close the loop through the old city, with time to notice the details most visitors pass by.
The route ends between the markets and the square: we cross the aisles of the Mercat de la Boqueria, where the fish, cured meats, and fruit stalls show what Catalan cooking is built on, and finish in Plaça Reial, among arcades, palm trees, and the lamps of a young Antoni Gaudí.
The walk lasts between two and four hours and stays flexible: we keep the pace of the group, stop for photographs, and adapt the order when a square is crowded or a church is closed for a service. Entrance to the cathedral and the churches along the route is included, while food and drinks are not; our guide points out local specialties at traditional eateries and market counters, and pickup from hotels, the port, the airport, and the train station is available at an extra cost.
